Fighter Pilot

fighter pilot?
Hey,
I am only 19, i soloed on my 16th birthday, and i’m considering joining the Navy end of this year.
My goal is to become a fighter pilot. I have know one or two, but they were in a looong time ago.
I was going to study Aircraft Propulsion Mechanics while going to college, because I would need a college degree to become an officer before i can become eligible for flight school.
My question is, how difficult is it reallY? I am REALLY confused. I realize it can be very, very competitive, but it’s gotta be possible, right?
What are the major things that rule people out? I think i still have 20/20 eyesight, but i dont’ know what else they all test, and how to know if i would even be eligible for flight school?
Is there neone here who can help? someone who’s been through the process, or has a family member or something?
I am just really confused and not sure right now, so any and all help will be GREATLY appreciated.
Cheers!!!
Another option would be to try to be a WSO (weapson systems officer) who is the back-seater in some F-18s. They are responsible for dropping the bombs, taking the pictures, anything that is not flying the plane. You are still qualified to fly the plane, if I remember correctly, in case something happens to the pilot.

Technical terminology is minimized or explained, yet enough of it is included to give the reader an idea of the complexity of the job. The author logged over 3,000 hours as a USAF fighter pilot, instructor pilot and maintenance fight test pilot, much of it in supersonic aircraft. |

Mozart’s Brain and the Fighter Pilot $13.95 As it turns out, you can teach an old dog new tricks. Not that we’re comparing anyone’s brain to a dog, because that would be, well, inappropriate. But if you want to give the ol’ noggin a workout, Dr. Richard Restak has 28 tricks to help you improve your mental fitness, memory, concentration, creativity and analytical ability. In Mozart’s Brain and the Fighter Pilot, the neuropsychiatrist and clinical professor of neurology at George Washington University Medical Center asserts that you can increase interconnections between the brain’s functions and keep it growing through exercise, reading, logic problems, learning to play a musical instrument and more. |

Boyd: The Fighter Pilot Who Changed The Art Of War $11.99 John Boyd may be the most remarkable unsung hero in all of American military history. Some remember him as the greatest U.S. fighter pilot ever — the man who in simulated air-to-air combat defeated every challenger in less than forty seconds. Some recall him as the father of our country’s most legendary fighter aircraft — the F-15 and F-16. Still others think of Boyd as the most influential military theorist since Sun Tzu. They know only half the story. Boyd more than any other person saved fighter aviation from the predations of the Strategic Air Command. His manual of fighter tactics changed the way every air force in the world flies and fights. He discovered a physical theory that forever altered the way fighter planes were designed. Later in life he developed a theory of military strategy that has been adopted throughout the world and even applied to business models for maximizing efficiency. And in one of the most startling and unknown stories of modern military history the Air Force fighter pilot taught the U.S. Marine Corps how to fight war on the ground. His ideas led to America’s swift and decisive victory in the Gulf War and foretold the terrorist attacks of September 11 2001. On a personal level Boyd rarely met a general he couldn’t offend. He was loud abrasive and profane. A man of daring ferocious passion and intractable stubbornness he was that most American of heroes — a rebel who cared not for his reputation or fortune but for his country. He was a true patriot a man who made a career of challenging the shortsighted and self-serving Pentagon bureaucracy. America owes Boyd and his disciples — the six men known as the "Acolytes" — a great debt. Robert Coram finally brings to light the remarkable story of a man who polarized all who knew him but who left a legacy that will influence the military — and all of America — for decades to come. .. |

Fighter Pilot: The Memoirs of Legendary Ace Robin Olds $6.99 Robin Olds was a larger-than-life hero with a towering personality. A graduate of West Point and an inductee in the National College Football Hall of Fame for his All-American performance for Army, Olds was one of the toughest college football players at the time. In WWII, Olds quickly became a top fighter pilot and squadron commander by the age of 22 – and an ace with 12 aerial victories. But it was in Vietnam where the man became a legend. He arrived in 1966 to find a dejected group of pilots and motivated them by placing himself on the flight schedule under officers junior to himself, then challenging them to train him properly because he would soon be leading them. Proving he wasn’t a WWII retread, he led the wing with aggressiveness, scoring another four confirmed kills, becoming a rare triple ace. Olds (who retired a brigadier general and died in 2007) was a unique individual whose personal story is one of the most eagerly anticipated military books of the year. |

An Ace Of The Eighth: An American Fighter Pilot’s Air War In Europe $6.29 FOR A FIGHTER PILOT IN THE MIGHTY EIGHTH, DEATH WAS ALWAYS A HEARTBEAT AWAY. When the skies of Europe blazed with the fiercest air battles in history, fighter pilots like Norman "Bud" Fortier were in the thick of it, flying four hundred miles an hour at thirty thousand feet, dodging flak and dueling with Nazi aces. In their role as "escorts" to Flying Fortresses and Liberators, the fighter squadrons’ ability to blast enemy aircraft from the sky was key to the success of pinpoint bombing raids on German oil refineries, communication and supply lines, and other crucial targets. Flying in formation with the bomber stream, Fortier and the rest of his squadron helped develop dive-bombing and strafing tactics for the Thunderbolts and Mustangs. As the war progressed, fighter squadrons began to carry out their own bombing missions. From blasting V-1 missile sites along France’s "rocket coast" and the hell-torn action of D day to the critical attacks on the Ruhr Valley and massive daylight raids on German industrial targets, Fortier was part of the Allies’ bitter struggle to bring the Nazi war machine to a halt. In describing his own hundred-plus missions and by including the accounts of fellow fighter pilots, Fortier recaptures the excitement and fiery terror of the world’s most dangerous cat-and-mouse game. From the Paperback edition. |

Loud And Clear: The Memoir Of An Israeli Fighter Pilot $11.59 A recently retired Israeli Air Force general and its second-highest-scoring fighter ace Iftach Spector is one of Israel"s living legends. He was the leader of the flight that attacked the USS Liberty in 1967. After the 1967 and 1973 wars in which he commanded a squadron of fighter-bombers he rose to head the IAF"s Training and War Lessons Section and later became its the Chief of Operations. He was one of the eight Israeli pilots who attacked Saddam Hussein"s nuclear reactor at Osirik in 1981. In 2003 his career took an even more dramatic turn: he was the senior signatory of the famous "Pilots" Letter " in which Spector and 27 other Israeli pilots stated their refusal to bomb targets in Palestine where collateral damage would likely be severe. His maverick conscience is well on display in this artfully written memoir which is currently a 10-week-and-counting bestseller in Israel and has been licensed in Brazil as well. The son of a family that immigrated to Palestine at the turn of the 20th century whose father and mother served in the Palmach Israel"s early clandestine commando force Spector has written a rich and reflective meditation on loyalty on what is right and wrong in war and on his dedication to the idea and reality of the state of Israel. The Pilots" Letter ended Spector"s military career but also made him one of the most compelling and celebrated defenders of the conscience of the Jewish state. In that battle as in his previous battles against Nasser"s MiGs his mother"s constant lesson to him sustained him: "All from within." General Spector"s first book A DREAM IN BLACK AND AZURE (1992; never translated into English) won the Sade Literary Award given to him personally by Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin. He has a B.A. in history and Middle East Studies from Tel Aviv University and a masters in political science from UCLA both with honors. |

Soul Survivor: The Reincarnation of a World War II Fighter Pilot $4.99 This is the story of James Leininger, who – a little more than two weeks after his second birthday – began having blood-curdling nightmares that just would not stop. When James began screaming out recurring phrases like, “Plane on fire! Little man can’t get out!” the Leiningers finally admitted that they truly had to take notice. When details of planes and war tragedies no two-year-old boy could know continued – even in stark daylight – Bruce and Andrea Leininger began to realize that this was an incredible situation. SOUL SURVIVOR is the story of how the Leiningers pieced together what their son was communicating and eventually discovered that he was reliving the past life of World War II fighter pilot James Huston. As Bruce Leininger struggled to understand what was happening to his son, he also uncovered details of James Huston’s life – and death – as a pilot that will fascinate military buffs everywhere. In SOUL SURVIVOR, we are taken for a gripping ride as the Leiningers’ belief system is shaken to the core, and both of these families come to know a little boy who, against all odds and even in the face of true skeptics, harbors the soul of this man who died long ago. |

Mozart’s Brain And The Fighter Pilot: Unleashing Your Brain’s Potential $9.29 In Mozart’s Brain and the Fighter Pilot , eminent neuropsychiatrist and bestselling author Richard Restak, M.D., combines the latest research in neurology and psychology to show us how to get our brain up to speed for managing every aspect of our busy lives. Everything we think and everything we choose to do alters our brain and fundamentally changes who we are, a process that continues until the end of our lives. Few people think of the brain as being susceptible to change in its actual structure, but in fact we can preselect the kind of brain we will have by continually exposing ourselves to rich and varied life experiences. Unlike other organs that eventually wear out with repeated and sustained use, the brain actually improves the more we challenge it. Most of us incorporate some kind of physical exercise into our daily lives. We do this to improve our bodies and health and generally make us feel better. Why not do the same for the brain? The more we exercise it, the better it performs and the better we feel. Think of Restak as a personal trainer for your brain he will help you assess your mental strengths and weaknesses, and his entertaining book will set you to thinking about the world and the people around you in a new light, providing you with improved and varied skills and capabilities. From interacting with colleagues to recognizing your own psychological makeup, from understanding the way you see something to why you’re looking at it in the first place, from explaining the cause of panic attacks to warding off performance anxiety, this book will tell you the whys and hows of the brain’s workings. Packed with practical advice and fascinating examples drawn from history, literature, and science, Mozart’s Brain and the Fighter Pilot provides twenty-eight informative and realistic steps that we can all take to improve our brainpower. From the Hardcover edition. |
